Resisting in Times of Chaos Without Burning Out
The world is burning—and many of us are feeling it in our bones. From climate catastrophe and war to rising authoritarianism and economic instability, the collective chaos can feel overwhelming. And yet, in the midst of it all, we’re still here. We’re still dreaming. Still resisting.
In a recent episode of the Modern Witches podcast, I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with Mauricio García—perfumer, aromatherapist, astrologer, and fellow magical practitioner—for a powerful conversation on how we stay rooted, whole, and inspired as we face the storms of our time. Together, we explored how astrology, scent, ritual, and the wisdom of the four elements can help us build a sustainable path of resistance.
🪐 Chaos & Cosmic Shifts: Astrology as a Mirror
We began by examining the astrological landscape of now—a sky filled with transformative energy. Pluto in Aquarius, Uranus moving toward Gemini, Saturn Aries, and Chiron in Aries are all asking us to evolve, to heal, and to step into responsibility in radically new ways.
Astrology isn’t just a tool for self-knowledge—it’s also a lens through which we can understand the larger systems in play. Each major transit reflects collective shifts and asks us to reflect on our own role in the changes unfolding.
We invited listeners to tune into their Sun, Moon, and Rising signs:
Sun: the core of your energy and life purpose
Moon: what you need to feel safe and nourished
Rising: the mask you wear and your instinctive way of engaging with the world
Understanding your chart helps you uncover how you resist best—not everyone is built for the frontlines, and that’s okay. The revolution needs many forms of magic.
Resistance Through the Four Elements
Mauricio and I then dove into the elemental wisdom of the zodiac, breaking down how each element—Fire, Earth, Air, and Water—offers a unique path to resilience and activism. Here's a glimpse:
🔥 Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): The Warriors
They move fast, burn bright, and carry the torch of change. Their challenge? Not burning out. We discussed how candle magic, martial movement (like dance), and fiery scents like cinnamon and black pepper help sustain their energy.
🌎 Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): The Builders
They ground movements in structure and endurance. We talked about the importance of rest, ritual altars, and the use of stabilizing scents like vetiver and patchouli to avoid burnout from over-responsibility.
🌬️ Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): The Visionaries
Thinkers and communicators who thrive on ideas and connection. They resist through language, organizing, and media—but can get lost in mental overwhelm. We explored breathwork, journaling, and clarifying scents like eucalyptus.
🌊 Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): The Healers
Deep feelers, intuitives, and emotional anchors for the collective. Their biggest challenge is emotional exhaustion. Protective rituals, moon baths, and soothing floral scents like rose and jasmine can offer support and boundaries.
Each sign has a strength, a shadow, and a sacred role in collective healing. Knowing yours helps you lean into your gifts—and care for your weaknesses—with compassion.
💨 The Power of Scent
One of the most enriching parts of the conversation was Mauricio’s insight into aromatherapy as an anchor in chaotic times. Scent connects directly to the limbic system—the part of the brain responsible for memory and emotion. This makes scent a powerful tool for regulating the nervous system, shifting your state of mind, and creating a sense of sacred space.
Whether it’s lighting incense before a ritual, carrying an anointing oil for grounding, or simply taking a deep breath with a beloved herbal scent—these small gestures can make a world of difference.
🤝 Resistance as a Rhythm, Not a Race
To close, we reflected on the importance of collective care. Resistance isn’t just an act—it’s a way of living. And living well means honoring cycles of rest, collaboration, and renewal. Burnout isn’t inevitable if we design our activism to include pleasure, ritual, and reconnection to the body.
The revolution will not be run on exhaustion. It will be carried by those who know how to rest, nourish, and reawaken.
