May unfurls her petals to reveal the crystallized wisdom of winter, in a fancy new dress. May warms hollow hearts and shouts poems at jaded souls about the impossibility of the clear sky and the resilience of weeds. May asks that we shed a layer of armor, and dip naked into rivers swollen with snow melt. May reawakens hope from deep in our bones. And so, we are dedicating May to the magick of the fae.

Essentially, Faeries are elemental spirits which are highly attuned to the landscape. Faeries are guardians of local places, caretakers of the garden patch, mischievous creatures who will steal your secrets, and protectors of all that is wild and free. Faeries have a complex cultural history that is often polarizing in magical circles.

In Celtic tradition, the Faerie are known as the sidhe, the Fae, Fae Folk, the Good Neighbors, or the Free Folk. They are known as Free Folk, because they were known as the last of the un-touched un-colonized Celtic people who lived off of the land, in relative seclusion from society. The Free Folk morphed from a wild untamed community living outside of the bounds of society, to a mystical population of beings who hold supernatural powers and have no perceived separation from the natural world. The Fae’s cousins are the tulips, their home is the glen, their duty is to protect these sacred places and non-human beings.

The Fae do not have a popular opinion of humankind. They have seen how we’ve mistreated the sacred wells, how we’ve poisoned medicinal weeds, and tormented the honey bees. They don’t respect us, because we don’t respect them - their home - the places that they cherish. The Fae’s mistrust of humanity runs deep, and there are many tales of faerie folk causing great harm to humans, leading them into trance for hundreds of years, or hexing a family line. Typically, the reason why fae folk curse and torment is because a human has disrespected or abused the land.

There are also tales of Fae Folk adopting or blessing humans who are tender and caring towards the earth. The Fae Folk acknowledges those who cherish the earth as sacred, and may support you in your work of reconnecting with earth devotions. The key in working with the Fae is reciprocity.

If you are feeling attracted to the Fae, know that you may be calling in a bit of mischief to your magick. Honor that trickster energy by making wild gestures to your magical self. Dance naked under the moon. Eat cake for breakfast.

Ways to connect with Fae Magick:

  • Dreaming with the Fae can open portals to other worlds. Be sure to have an excellent tether, something that calls your spirit back home when you wake from encounters with the fae realm.

  • Tend to a sacred wild space. Visit it regularly. Leave respectful (biodegradable) offerings to the land. Introduce yourself. Sing a song to the elemental spirits who dwell there.

  • Build a faerie home or nest in your garden. Invite the faeries to become caretakers of your garden alongside you. Call in their wild love through the plants you nurture there.

How have you connected with the Fae Folk? We love a good fae story…
